BBRAeNews No.3 - Good Neighbourliness - Extensions & Renovations

Good Neighborliness - Extensions & Renovations - edited by Benjamin
With a view to spread good neighborliness among neighbors in a community, the Authorities especially the Perancang and Penguatkuasa departments of MPK should be strict in the implementation of the rules and regulations pertaining to extentions and renovations to houses. All actions should be taken swiftly without fear or favour.

There are rules and regulations regarding the extention and renovation of houses but many residents in their zest to gain the extra footage or beauty for their own house go ahead to extend or renovate their house against the established rules and regulations. They will pay the fine later. After all, what is a RM500 fine compare to the hundred thousand ringgit spend on the extention and renovation. They forget the decent gesture to obtain their neighbors consent or no objection when changing the landscape of their common boundaries. They forget the adage that to have good neighbors you must be a good neighbor yourself first.

MPK is empowered to take house owners to court and the court is empowered to order the illegal extentions to be pull down but MPK and the court have never made such a decision due to our "tolak ansur" mentality. This weakness together with political interference have given rise to many house owners violating the rules and regulations, knowing very well that the fine is minimal and any illegal extention will then be acceptable. We all forget that at the end neighbors ended up not talking to one another and our society suffers.

What happen to the rules where house owners are required to obtain the consent and no objection of their immediate neighbors before any extention plan can be considered by MPK? What happen to practise of stop work order, wherein no extention or renovation can be carried out until there is an approved plan? All these weakness by the Perancang and Enforcement departments in MPK clearly manifest the lack of co-ordinated actions or rather their inactions due to the corrupt system and political interference.

The MPK under the new Pakatan Rakyat government in Selangor is no different than the BN government. It is almost a year since the Pakatan Rakyat took over and they have yet to walk the talk. Where is the political will to set things right and create good neighborliness among the rakyat?
